The history of Simba Potato Chips in South Africa

Simba, one of South Africa's most iconic snack brands, was founded in 1957 by A.J. (Tony) Hutt in Pretoria, South Africa. The name “Simba,” meaning "lion" in Swahili, was chosen to symbolize strength, power, and boldness—values that resonate with the brand's approach to crafting snacks. Initially focused on producing high-quality potato chips, Simba quickly gained popularity for its flavorful offerings and became a staple in many South African households.

Throughout the years, Simba has expanded its range to include various flavored chips, crisps, and snacks, including the beloved Simba Chips, Simba NikNaks, and Simba Cheddar and Onion. Simba’s ability to consistently innovate and introduce bold flavors has earned it a loyal following.

In 1999, Simba was acquired by PepsiCo, which helped further solidify its place in the South African snack market. Despite this, Simba has continued to stay true to its roots, providing a wide variety of snacks that are enjoyed by people of all ages in South Africa and beyond. Today, Simba remains one of the top snack brands in the country, offering a delightful range of chips and snacks for all tastes.
