The history of Baumanns Biscuits in South Africa

The Baumann's Marie Biscuit has a rich history intertwined with South Africa's biscuit-making heritage. In 1895, John Michael Leonard Baumann, a German immigrant who had settled in Durban, introduced the Marie biscuit to South Africa. He acquired an advanced biscuit-making machine and began producing "fancy biscuits," including the Marie, which was inspired by the original created by British bakery Peek Freans in 1874 to commemorate the marriage of Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia to the Duke of Edinburgh . Initially, these biscuits were sold loose in tins to maintain freshness.

The company, originally known as L. Baumann & Co., underwent a name change to Bakers Limited in 1915 due to anti-German sentiment during World War I. Despite the challenges, the Marie biscuit remained a staple in South African households. In 1918, William Baumann established a biscuit factory in Cape Town under the name Selected Products Ltd, trading as Baumann's Biscuits, which later became a subsidiary of Bakers Limited . Today, the 150g Baumann's Marie Biscuit box continues to be a beloved product, reflecting over a century of biscuit-making tradition in South Africa
