The history of Laager in South Africa
Laager Rooibos is one of South Africa’s most well-loved tea brands, with a legacy deeply rooted in the country’s culture and agricultural heritage. Rooibos, a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea made from the Aspalathus linearis plant, is indigenous to the Cederberg region of the Western Cape. While rooibos has been used for generations by indigenous communities, it began gaining mainstream popularity in the early 1900s as a healthful, homegrown alternative to black tea.
Laager, one of the oldest rooibos brands in South Africa, was established in 1945. Over the decades, it became synonymous with quality and tradition, offering South African families an affordable and comforting beverage option. The tagless tea bags—like those in the 80 pack—represent a convenient evolution of this tradition, catering to modern lifestyles while maintaining the earthy, naturally sweet flavour that rooibos lovers cherish. Today, Laager Rooibos remains a staple in homes across the country and is celebrated for its local roots, health benefits, and its role in South Africa’s national identity.
