The history of Ultra Mel in South Africa

Ultra Mel custard was first introduced in South Africa in the early 1970s by Borden Foods. It quickly became a beloved household name, known for its creamy vanilla flavor and versatility in traditional desserts. Over the years, Ultra Mel grew to become a staple in many South African homes, especially during family meals and festive celebrations.

In 1998, global food company Danone entered the South African market through a joint venture with local dairy brand Clover, forming Danone Clover. This partnership brought global innovation to the local dairy industry. By 2010, Danone took full ownership of the business, including the Ultra Mel brand. Under Danone, Ultra Mel continued to grow, launching new products like milkshakes and maintaining its place as one of South Africa’s most trusted dessert brands.
