Spur Steak Ranches was founded in 1967 by a man named Allan Ambor in Cape Town, South Africa. He opened the first Spur restaurant in Newlands, a suburb in Cape Town. The concept was inspired by American Western-style steakhouses, offering a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere and focusing on high-quality steaks and hearty meals.

The first Spur quickly became popular due to its unique atmosphere and the focus on family-friendly dining, which was a novel idea in South Africa at the time. The decor was influenced by the Wild West, and the focus was on providing a great experience for families while serving high-quality food.
